Inkerman, the town of the caves, is located in the eastern outskirts of Sevastopol. In the early 15 th century the rulers of Theodora principality (the medieval Christian state that existed in the mountains in the vicinity of present-day Bakhchisaray) built the fortress of Kalamita in the Akhtiarsk estuary to defend their port. The remains of the fortifications -the ruins of the walls and towers – can be seen above the plateau over the Monastery of St. Clement.
When the Turks established protectorate over the Crimean Khanate the fortress was named Inkerman -” the fortress of the caves.” The point is that the caves of an old Christian monastery of the 7 th-9 th centuries were located under the fortress. In Soviet times the monastery was closed, and in the 1990 s it resumed its activity.
