Starokostiantyniv is situated 49 km. away from Khmelnytsky. The main sight of this district center is the castle (Zamkova St.). The Proprietor of the city, prince Kostyantyn Ostrozky, built the fortress simultaneously with the city, which he named after his father. The fortress (1561-1571) that appeared on the peninsula surrounded by marshlands between the Sluch and Ikopot rivers defended the city against attacks by the Tatars and Turks. The castle suffered the most severe attack in 1618. In 1637 it was partly reconstructed. Today the complex includes the palace with defensive tower, the Church of the Holy Trinity (check point) with a bell tower and gates. The defensive wall and ditch with a drawbridge have been preserved only in part. Under the complex there are deep basements where weapon and foods were kept. It is worth visiting Starokostyantiniv museum of local lore (15 K. Marx St.).
The next excursion opens the geological mysteries of Ukraine -without losing the historical atmosphere of the adventure. If you look on the map of Zhytomyr region, you will see that Zhytomyrske Polissya is a kingdom of forests and stones, both of which are variable.
